A service electrician is an electrician that usually handles the troubleshooting and repairs of electrical equipment that is not working properly. This type of work tends to be smaller in nature as sometimes the issues are loose connections, blown fuses, or faulty breakers. Service electricians usually have diagnostic equipment to help them pinpoint the failure points and circuit tracers to find where a circuit goes to.

Electricians usually charge between $90 – $135 an hour in Canada. Some companies charge a minimum fee and some charge a call-out fee to cover the cost of the fuel and travel time to go do smaller jobs.

The difference between an electrician and an electrical contractor is that an electrician is an individual tradesman, whereas an electrical contractor can be either a business or a person.

To start an electrical company you will require liability insurance, a master’s electrician ticket (or you must hire one) to pull electrical permits, and a business license. A service van is also recommended.

Service electricians tend to be paid more than their counterparts. This pay difference is usually because of their ability to troubleshoot and solve electrical issues which companies tend to pay more for.

To become an electrician in the province of Alberta you must first find a company that is willing to indenture you. Once a company has agreed to help you start your career in the electrical field you must sign up to register as an electrician apprentice with AIT.
Both you and the company will have to enter into what is called a contract to say you work for them. The process from here on out is as follows you work in the field till you reach a certain number of hours where then you go to school for your 1st year of schooling 8-week program if you pass both school and the TQ (trade qualifier) you become a 2nd-year apprentice and repeat the process for 4 years. The 4th year of schooling has 2 final exams called the TQ and IP (interprovincial Red Seal). In other provinces you must pass both these exams but in Alberta you only have to pass the TQ to become a journeyman but you can never work out of province without passing the IP.

Electricians make fairly decent pay. The average Journeyman Electrician makes $80k – $105k a year. Apprentices make a percentage of the journeyman rate at that particular company. There is no standardized pay across the country, and wages can vary quite a bit depending on where you live.
