100 AMP Panel

When Should You Upgrade to a 100 AMP Panel?
Almost every electrical socket in the house nowadays has something connected to it. Whether it be refrigerators, kettles, desktop computers, televisions, and smartphone chargers, these components are always plugged in. People are using more electricity than ever before. Therefore, newer homes need to accommodate the extra demand, but it wasn’t always like this. Many older buildings only had 60-amp service, whereas newer houses have 100 amp panels. That was sufficient back then, but it may not be adequate anymore. The total capacity of the electrical service provided by electrical utilities to a home is indicated in amperes or amps. This is the reason why most households either have a 100 amp electrical panel or a 200 amp electrical panel installed.
What Is Amperage?

Amperage is a measurement scale used to determine how much power is moving through a building’s wiring. This figure can range from 30 amps in old buildings to 400 amps in new and bigger households with electric heating and other devices.

Knowing the size of your building’s electrical service is the most straightforward approach to determine whether you should use a 100 amp panel or a 200 amp electrical panel to modernize your electrical system. It would be best if you also considered whether the electrical service is strong enough to accommodate the upgrade.

Should You Go For A 100 Amp Panel Or A 200 Amp Electrical Panel?

So, which is better: a 100 amp or a 200 amp electrical panel for your home? While many individuals do not believe replacing the electrical panels to be an urgent concern, it is an essential step in upgrading the electrical system of a house. The key difference between 100 amp and 200 amp electrical panels is the size of the latter.

Compared to a 100 amp panel, a 200 amp electrical panel has more capacity to power bigger loads such as EV chargers, Hot Tubs, and other power hungry appliances you may wish to add. While 100 amps can power most of these devices without issue you should consult with a certified electrician to perform a service demand calculation to determine the appropriate service size.

When Should You Upgrade to a 100 AMP Panel?

Many residences that were built in the 1940s and 50s have a weaker amperage electrical service than what is demanded nowadays. And while that may not seem like a big concern, you must include the assessment of insurance providers. Many insurance providers believe that a 60-amp service is not as safe as a 100 amp service. Therefore, they will typically refuse to insure a home with a 60-amp panel. They will not only bill you more, but they will also frequently refuse to insure your householdl! Some insurance providers may provide interim coverage if you update the electrical system in an acceptable length of time. However, this isn’t always the case.

Upgrading your electrical service may appear to be a daunting process. Still, it is crucial to ensure that your household can adequately support the electrical equipment you use daily. It is also critical that you employ a licensed electrician for this particular task. If you want to have a 100 amp panel installed or get an electrical panel upgrade, you should not hesitate to get in touch with the professionals at Platinum Electrical Services Inc.

100 AMP Panel - FAQ's

The number of circuits that can be on a 100 amp electrical panel varies depending on the manufacturer. If you have access to a 100 circuit panel there is no stopping you from reaching that capacity as long as you are not exceeding the load of the service which is determined by doing a load calculation for your home.

More times than not 100 amp panels are more than enough to supply power to the home. To determine if you require more than this a house load calculation will need to be done.

The difference between a 100 amp and 200 amp electrical panel is the size of the main breaker, the rating of the busbar in the panel, the rating of the panel enclosure, and the size of the wire supplying power to your home. A 200 amp panel can supply more power to your devices but a 100 amp panel is enough to do the job required.

To replace a 100 amp panel the cost depends on whether or not the panel is a subpanel or if it is a main electrical panel. Subpanels cost significantly less to replace than the main electrical panel due to requiring power disconnection.
